Horn lady

The past few days I've been trying to develop a new technique involving paint.
I had some successes and some failures.
I still can't blend acrylic as smoothly as I would like to.

All this playing around on little bits of paper is fun and making my desk a mess, but it's not really improving my art.

So I needed to draw something!

And here is what I've been working on today.....

It's an image that just kinda popped out of my head when I was doodling in bed, with my natural history book open :)

Hope you like!

Whales and Wales

So I've recently moved house to Wales.

Its been good, it was pretty much the only place in the UK that it didn't snow, no building snowmen for me :(
So for the past few days it has been raining non stop!

And the weather isn't nice warm rain like in the Med, its horrid windy rain that blows your umbrella inside out and the hood off your head.

So here is my illustration of it raining whales, or sky whales.

Different from my other stuff more simplistic and children's booky :)

Brave Illustration

Hay everyone!

The past few months have been really hectic, from peter breaking his arms to moving house.

Finally I've gotten all settled in, and a lovely desk set up. :)

I'm not one of those lucky people that can work anywhere, I like having my space and desk with me in the centre surrounded with all my arty things.

So I drew an image of Merida and Mom bear from Brave. I really love that film,  it has to be one of my fave Pixar films.

Here are some work in progress shots
I tend to post these more on my instagram profile for convenience, if you have instagram check me out, my username is Ellenstration.

Now for the art work!!!

My finished work done with mixed media.
Taken on my phone so sorry about the quality, I can't get the hang of photographing my work.

Little Mermaid Coloured

The Little Mermaid in full colour from my Hairy Tale series.
I based her facial makings off different sea creatures but mainly the Red Lion Fish, then I matched the face markings with the hair colour to help make her look more natural. I wanted her to look quite alien, foreign and not the norm.

Little Mermaid Screen Printed

Here is The Little Mermaid screen printed on blotting paper.

I really like how this came out, and will look just as good as the others in the coloured version.
The markings on her face will look apart of her once she is coloured.

Beast Full Colour

Here is Beast in full colour. The shading of his hair took awhile.
I like how shiny and glossy his mane looks.
You are going to have to full view to see the little details, some reason in smaller view it makes them look grey or white.

I hope you like him.

Beast Screen printed

Here is Beast from my Hairy Tales series, in all his screen printed glory!

He took quite a while to draw out. His face had so many little lines.
Well I hope you like him, I'm pleased with how he turned out.
He is lighter than Snow White mainly because his mane isn't black it going to be brown. :)

The Head of Beast

After all those doodles and unfinished drawings of Beast's head I did draw one I liked. Woot Woot!

So here he is....

You may have noticed I like sketching in blue pencil, I find it helps me keep the drawings cleaner. :)

The next part I had problems with was how to make the hair flow like Snow White's.
Here Are some more funny looking drawings of me trying to sort that out.

This I have named Snake Beast as well he looks like a snake, don't worry I fixed him. I think I just got carried away with drawing all his hair.

Yay this is finished Beast now next is all the objects from his story.
I hope you like him

Beast Doodles

So once Snow White was out of the way I moved onto the tale, "Beauty and the Beast" one of my favourite stories in all its many forms.

I was going to do Belle but in the original story she wasn't described very much or at all, and I wanted to stay away from doing Disney fan art.
So I thought I should mix it up and do Beast instead.

Here are my doodles and drawings of me trying to figure out what the hell I wanted Beast to look like.
I know I wanted him furry so I looked at tons of lions, but I wanted him to be quite mythical so crazy horns and snake tongues was the way forward!

These images would normally be shoved in a deep dark draw somewhere but some made me giggle specially the one where he looks like a ghost, so I thought I'd share them with you too.
Because everyone needs a giggle.

Snow White Coloured

Just a little post to show you my final all screen printed and coloured.

Im really pleased how this came out.
I water coloured it on blotting paper,  its a must try!
Blotting paper is my new fave paper, shame its more expensive than normal cartridge paper. I found it blends the watercolours nicely and no need for large scale washes. Win win :)

Snow White from my Hairy Tale series, my own interpretation from the text from Brothers Grimm.

Screen Printing Testers

Hay everyone,

This week I've been testing my line art for the Hairy Tales image I posted a few weeks ago.
Make sure you click to see all the details, its funny how each time I drew the old lady she turned out different =)

Here are the left are testers of different pens I could use for the light fixing process in screen printing.
On the right is how it screen printed on blotting paper, and some little colour tests on my favourite ones.

Left: Shows different pens of normal tracing paper

Right: shows the screen printed lines on blotting paper with colour added with watercolour

Below is some more tests but this time drawn on mark  resist  paper, it was beautiful to draw on my it costs a lot. Like before it was screen printed on to blotting paper with come colour added with watercolour.

Penguin Book Cover

I know I haven't posted in awhile, I've been busy working on many other things.

I recently finished this book cover for the Puffin children's book cover prize.

Wow I spent so much time on it.

I went with a theme of Snow White, I love the red apple.

Here it is!

It is all screen printed, then all the elements were put together in photoshop. The background texture I did myself with a mixture of glue and paint.
Im really pleased with the out come.
